Earth Day 2011

 Earth Day 2011 

Monroe County Earth Day Expo Planning Committee is accepting registrations for exhibitors for the April 30, 2011 Earth Day Expo.  An essay contest for Monroe County juniors and seniors is also being planned to recognize Earth Day in Monroe County. 

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Earth Day celebration in Monroe County – “Monroe – Celebrate, Discover, Learn”, on April 30th, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Loranger Square in Monroe.  Plan to join us to celebrate Earth Day, and promote the green efforts of your business or organization.  Registrations are being accepted until April 1, 2011 for those interested in reserving a free exhibit space. The Expo planning committee is also seeking groups, businesses or individuals who would like to be a sponsor of the event.  To register as an exhibitor or sponsor, contact Jamie Dean at (734) 240-7909 or Jamie_dean@monroemi.org. 

 

Earth Day Essay Contest

The Earth Day Committee is sponsoring an essay contest for Monroe County high school juniors and seniors.  Interested students are requested to submit essays of 400 words or less on the following question: 

“What is Earth Day? Why and when was it started? Is there still a need for this annual celebration? Why, or why not?” 

Prizes will be awarded for the top three essays.  First place will receive a $150 savings bond; second place will receive $100 savings bond and third will receive a $50 bond.  The three teachers sponsoring the winning essay will also receive $50 to use in their classrooms.  Winners will also have the opportunity to read their essays at the Earth Day celebration on April 30 at Loranger Square.  The essays and accompanying application form will be due by March 24, 2011 by mail to Molly Hunt, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI  48162.  Follow the application form and guidelines and submit them to: Molly Hunt, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI  48162. Entries must be postmarked by March 24, 2011.  If you cannot download the forms, you can receive them by emailing Jamie Dean at Jamie_dean@monroemi.org.
